I love when a game can be as absurd and creative as it wants and brings that to the forefront of the game. You can tell that with One More Game’s new game SWAPMEAT, which is a roguelite third-person co-op shooter where instead of the enemies dropping loot to help with your run. They drop different body parts where you can then attach them to your own body. You have 3 different parts you can add: the head, torso, and legs all which give you different abilities.
Traversal is key when it comes to SWAPMEAT, if you have your Rangus Suit (basically your starting body) you are pretty slow and squishy, but I found after I was able to get a few parts to attach to myself I was able to get some speed going and continued to change parts to try out different abilities. I was able to get some long chicken legs that gave me a fast dash I could use to get to the objectives in the map faster. Another part I got was one that dropped a little turret to help me shoot enemies.

I almost died a few times when playing but that is where I think SWAPMEAT shines on the roguelite stage. Each body part has its own health bar and my legs and torso had basically been blown off so I was just a head with a gun. I thought that was it for me but continued to play. I was able to take down some enemies which dropped their own torso and legs and was right back into the action.

I was able to quickly chat with Jamie Stormbreaker who is the CEO / Lead Game Designer at One More Game. We chatted about some of the inspiration they had when making SWAPMEAT and being inspired by Invader Zim, Rick and Morty as well as Tim and Erik. I could definitely tell where that inspiration lies within the game from its colourful artwork and its eccentric humour. Jamie and I also talked about how they want to bring fun to the work environment allowing writers to bring whatever they have to the table and allowing creativity to take the wheel. I could definitely see that when playing SWAPMEAT as this is a game made by a team that wants to have fun and give players that enjoyment as well.
I feel like I have scratched the surface of SWAPMEAT and can’t wait to jump into this game again, trying out new ability combos and beating some of the unique bosses. Hopefully with some friends when their next play test comes out.
