Buffalo Buffalo, a Vancouver BC based game studio showed off their debut game Fresh Tracks at PAX East 2025, and I was extremely lucky to sit down and experience their hard work this weekend.

Fresh Tracks is a rhythm roguelite skiing game that uses 28 original soundtrack songs. As Skaii I am tasked with bringing music and hope back to the lands. Starting out I’m greeted by a beautiful winter landscape with snow covered pine trees and a night sky filled with the northern lights. My goal during the demo is to recruit Sogvar, one of four divine companions in the game. What I found most interesting while talking to the team is that no matter which companion you have for your run the songs are the same, only the genre itself changes. I start with Koda who’s genre is similar to techno. Which then lead me to Sogvar who’s music shifts to a more heavy metal genre as the the Mythic of Adventure tests my worthiness, if I pass he’ll join me, if I fail I start over on my grand adventure to unite the pantheon of Norwyn.

For me, I can find it difficult to dive head first into a roguelite, losing sometimes hours of progress on a run can leave me quite de-motivated unless the story has me wanting to start another run right away. With Fresh Tracks not only is the story that was revealed to me have me wanting to find out what else is in store for Skaii, but the music alone was such a vibe that when I was lucky enough to sit down and play again Sunday before the event closed down. I was just happy to have this game’s beautiful soundtrack in my ears. With a hopeful release sometime in August, I will be keeping an eye on my steam page until I get to launch this at home and once again enjoy a well crafted soundtrack and setting. So much so, that I got to present them with Gamerheads most prestigious award Best in show.
