Scurry into the delightfully chaotic world of Mischief. This whimsical and silly family game invites up to four players to join forces in a local co-op adventure. Face off against a series of mini-boss encounters to save trapped rats from the clutches of dark magic. Get ready for laughter, teamwork, and a whole lot of magical mischief.
The game starts out by introducing the story of a rat named Plague, who casts a spell of dark magic to keep his fellow rodents home in an attempt to curb their natural mischievous tendencies. Obviously, the rats didn’t care and wanted to cause mischief regardless. I got to choose my champion from a quirky quartet- Sparkle, Beef, Gunk, and Candy. While the characters currently share similar playstyles, I would love to see an introduction of unique skill sets in future updates to add depth and variety to the gameplay. With a name like Beef, he could easily be a combat powerhouse! Of course I chose Sparkle as she was in a pink dress with a crown- yes, I’m one of those girls who always chooses Princess Peach when playing Mario Kart.

The adventure begins right away with a charmingly chaotic gameplay experience. I was immediately faced with a delightful dilemma: which weapon to choose? Crayons? Drink umbrellas? The colorful options were playful and I appreciated the detail of the items changing color as if I had plucked it from a fresh box of crayons or drink. Combat is accessible, perfect for family play, but since I was playing solo I did find some of the encounters to be pretty lengthy. I did enjoy that after certain points the boss would add different mechanics or ramp up the difficulty a bit. The game shines with its creative level design. One moment I’m using sandbox toys, the next I was slinging condiments at a ‘hotdog.’ I think this showcases the thought behind the developers' playful level design.

One other thing I really enjoyed about Mischief was the freedom to just explore! After battling a mini-boss, I unlocked different items like a little car that I could drive around the map. Later, I found the skate park and did a cool flip off a ramp. It made the game feel so much more alive and interactive and I could see families having fun just exploring and interacting with the silly items.

The game bursts with vibrant, playful artwork that perfectly captures its whimsical spirit. Each area is thoughtfully designed, creating a cohesive and immersive world. While navigating the different areas I felt like I stepped into my own Toy Story adventure with the tiny rats exploring a larger-than-life world. However, one detail did leave me wondering: the fortune cookie paper borders around the rats’ subtitles. While cute, the significance isn’t immediately clear and could benefit from further explanation either in the story or from a discoverable item. That one detail is the only thing that felt out of place from the rest of the game. Overall, the art style is a major highlight, enhancing the game’s playful and engaging atmosphere.

From crayon battles to condiment wars, Mischief delivers a healthy dose of silly fun through its unique blend of playful combat, imaginative level design, and charming exploration. If you’re ready for some lighthearted chaos and adorable rats, make sure to Wishlist Mischief!
