Neko Atsume Purrfect Review: A Laid-Back and Adorable VR Experience for Cat Lovers

Platform reviewed: Meta Quest 2

Also on: Meta Quest 3, Quest Pro

Price: $19.99

I have tried numerous VR games, but none are quite like Neko Atsume Purrfect. While technically a game, it offers a more laid-back and soothing experience. The objective is simple: attract as many cats as you can. You can pet, play, and even pick up the cats that come to visit. If you're seeking a calming game where you can spend time with adorable cats, Neko Atsume Purrfect is an ideal choice.

The gameplay is straightforward, and a tutorial guides you through the basics. By placing treats, you can entice new cats to visit your yard. Then, with the press of a button, you can snap your fingers to call the cats over for some affection. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that petting the cats made them purr, and the vibration from the controllers added a touch of realism. I was also amused to realize that I could pick up the cats, although I wish there was an option to keep them on my lap and relax. With a variety of cats available, I soon found myself surrounded by different cute friends. Each cat has a name and stats, and you can even rename them if you wish.

Starting with a few toys and snacks, more items can be obtained through the in-game app. Money is earned by logging in daily and entering the secret password (which can be found in the in-game newspaper) into the app. There is a wide selection of toys to purchase, such as a laser light or a cat tree. The more items you buy, the more rare cats you will attract.

The most unique feature of Neko Atsume Purrfect is its mixed reality aspect. By walking through a door in the back of the room within the game, you can access the mixed reality gameplay. The game does an excellent job guiding you through the setup process, although a fairly large space is needed to enjoy the experience fully. In mixed reality, only one cat can visit at a time, but it was fascinating to see and interact with the cat in my office.

Final Grade: B

Neko Atsume Purrfect offers a relaxing experience with some game mechanics, such as purchasing food and toys for the cats. However, the game's main appeal is to unwind and collect as many different cats as possible. The mixed reality aspect adds an interesting dimension to the game as well. This game feels perfect for families with children.
