GIGASWORD! This was a name I was hearing a lot when I first got to PAX East I was excited to see that I was going to be able to try out the game and chat a bit with Studio Hybrid about their new and exciting game.

GIGASWORD is a 2D pixelated metroidvania game where I carried around a cumbersome sword to help me defeat enemies and move around the map. I had the ability to drop the sword to allow me to jump higher and move faster but came at the cost of not having anything to defend myself from enemies. I was never too far away from the sword though as it has its uses other than just defeating enemies. The sword was also used to open doors and weigh down pressure plates while I was navigating the puzzles of the game. I was able to chat with Jack Breen for a bit before getting my hands on GIGASWORD. They are the sole developer of the game and this has been a passion project of his since he started working on it back in 2019. Jack mentioned that a big inspiration for the game was Zelda and Shovel Knight. I was instantly excited to hear that as Zelda is one of my favourite series of all time. Once I got my hands on GIGASWORD, I was definitely able to see the inspiration as I was constantly looking for secrets and thinking hard about how I was going to solve this puzzle.

The art also stood out , as it was incredibly meticulous when running around the dungeons and castle landscape. The background scenes of the game were what caught my eye when playing as they seemed to always be moving or had some sort of parallax to it giving the scene depth and liveliness, that definitely added charm to the game.
I am very excited to try out more of GIGASWORD when it releases. I feel like I am going to sink many hours into this game trying to find all the secrets and delightfully banging my head trying to figure out the puzzles. Studio Hybrid is hoping to bring this game to as many platforms as they can so definitely look out for the game when it is released.
