I had the opportunity to play two phenomenal games published by Null Games: Demon Spore and Streetdog BMX. Despite being so different, both games highlight the diversity and innovation that Null Games is capable of.
The first game I'll start with is Streetdog BMX. I approached this game with no expectations, but I quickly discovered it captures the same thrilling, trick-based vibe as Tony Hawk. I played through the tutorial and found it intuitive and easy to master the tricks. The tutorial guided me through each move, doing an excellent job of explaining how to pull off different techniques. Before I knew it, I was sliding across bars, doing wheelies, and nailing jumps. While there wasn’t a full game mode to compete against others, there was a mode where I could rack up high scores by chaining tricks together. I genuinely can’t wait to see what else is in store for Streetdog BMX.
The other game I got to try was Demon Spore, a strategic, top-down shootee that immediately drew me in. I had the chance to play alongside one of the members from Null Games, and the cooperative experience made it an absolute blast.
The premise behind Demon Spore is that I'm sent into a lab where the spore is actively spreading. Each room is procedurally generated, so I never know what surprises await. The challenge lies in the fact that with every move I make, the spore also spreads.
I'm presented with a grid of rooms, with the exit clearly marked, as well as the current location of the spreading spore. After I clear a room, I’m taken back to the grid to see where the spore is heading next, as it’s the spore’s turn to move. My challenge is to reach the exit while avoiding any contact with the spreading spore. Unfortunately, that's not always possible, and at one point, my path took me right into the heart of the spore. Luckily, I managed to reach the next level during the demo, but my time ran out just as I arrived. I’m eager to see what else Demon Spore has to offer.
