Ender Magnolia: A Stunning Sequel and Gamerheads' Best of Show Winner | PAX West 2024

At PAX West, one of the standout titles was Ender Magnolia. As the sequel to the acclaimed Ender Lilies, this game builds on the successful formula of its predecessor. The animation, music, and combat mechanics are well crafted, contributing to an amazing experience. It's no surprise that Ender Magnolia was honored with one of our Best of PAX West awards.

The first aspect that captivated me was the visuals of the game. Set in the same universe as Ender Lilies, but unfolding decades later, the story follows the protagonist, Lilac, on her quest to purify the corrupted Homunculi that now plague the kingdom. The game's world is dark and gritty, yet the visuals are strikingly vibrant. It's reminiscent of an anime, where every detail has been meticulously crafted, and the dedication to these details shines throughout the gameplay.

I asked the developers about how they managed to produce the sequel so quickly. They explained that they had already been developing ideas and working on the sequel concurrently with the first game. They received feedback from the initial release indicating that the abundance of Homunculi overwhelmed many players, who felt that the individual backstories of these characters were underdeveloped. In response, the developers aimed to intentionally concentrate on enhancing the narratives of the various Homunculi in the sequel, ensuring that players could engage more deeply with each character.

Another aspect that truly impressed me was how easy it was to jump in and start playing. The first Homunculi I encountered was Nola, a sword-wielding character who joined my journey. The combat felt satisfying— a quick jump, a few well-timed slashes, and I was swiftly killing the enemies. Save states were thoughtfully positioned, and I discovered one right before the first boss, another Homunculi I needed to purify. This boss presented a bit of a challenge; I died several times before finally figuring out their attack pattern. Once I grasped it, I was able to defeat the boss and add this new Homunculi to my team. Their ability was on a cooldown timer and featured a dash attack that sent them charging into battle against enemies. I found myself seamlessly combining Nola's sword slashes with the dash attack of my new ally, which made me feel like a true master of the game.

The second boss presented a greater challenge. Whispered tales spoke of a once-guardian, now a corrupted, winged adversary, marking it as my next foe. The encounter required me to swiftly maneuver to evade its basilisk gun assaults while I countered with the dash attacks, grounding the winged adversary and striking with my sword, Nola. The combat was demanding, yet not so much as to turn me away. Unfortunately, my demo session ended before I could defeat him.

As I walked away, I couldn't shake the feeling that this game was a strong contender for the Best of PAX West. I look forward to exploring the depths of this mysterious and visually stunning world when it finally releases.
