Survivor games are becoming a new and popular genre of game where you start out with one ability that auto triggers periodically, defeating enemies creates XP that unlocks additional abilities and upgrades for the ones you already have. If you have played Vampire Survivor you know what I am talking about. Asgard’s Fall - Viking Survivor is a new and interesting game in the survivor genre.

There isn’t much of a story when it comes to Asgard’s Fall but that is usually the case for these types of games. Instead I started off playing as a warrior. The game is pixel based so visually I was a lump of cute pixels swinging a giant sword around the map. I started gaining new abilities on my first run all in line with the Norse mythology theme, examples were I would toss out Mjolnir Thor’s iconic hammer, or Tyr’s sword that would zap enemies around it. After about ten minutes of gaining abilities and leveling them up a boss spawned, and I died. Ending my run and bringing me back to the hub area where I was able to gain additional skills for my warrior, unlock new weapons. With the new skills and weapons I bravely went back in and tried again.

The art style is very vibrant which I thought was great to look at especially once you are in a level and there are hundreds of things on the screen attacking me or my abilities flying across the screen. I think one thing I wish there was more map space for the runs. I was constantly running into invisible walls which would definitely mess me up when trying to run away from the hordes of enemies. Something I enjoy about Vampire Survivor is their secrets you run into when running a map. But it is more difficult to do in Asgard’s Fall when I keep feeling boxed in.

An interesting new thing with Asgard’s Fall is the Web of Wyrd. Every other level I gained in a run opened up a new screen called the Web of Wyrd, and let me pick one of three upgrades for my run. This could be a new health generation or attack speed to name a few. I would put these on a diamond like blocks that were connected by lines. Depending on the skill it would also connect with the skill adjacent to it as well. For example if I selected an attack speed upgrade and placed it down and then on my next run got a skill that increased the effectiveness of the skill to the left of where I would put the bonus I could boost my attack speed even further. I also would gain skills that were rare but would only be active if I had a certain number of skills surrounding the rare skill. Making me have to think about where I want to place my skills.

After I finally beat the first and second boss of the first area. I was brought back to the main hub area which let me unlock a new character with its own skill tree as we as another cool feature called warpaint. This is where I could boost my skills even more and create loadouts. So if I wanted to boost my status of chill and then grab all the chill abilities in my run I could do so. What warpaint does is you get an empty block that I could put sigils down on. I would have to move the sigils around to place them on the block to effectively use the space I had available. It reminded me of how  Resident Evil's inventory management works.

Final Grade: B+

Asgard’s Fall - Viking Survivor is a cool new survivor game where I can see myself putting many hours into gaining new skills, unlocking new weapons and characters as well as building out new warpaint. As well as trying out new combinations on the Web of Wyrd. I hope Soulpotion the developers of the game continue to build on what they have with Asgard’s Fall and if you enjoy games like Vampire Survivor or any other Survivor game you should definitely check out Asgard’s Fall.
